What a week for Cairo. Finally, she pushed through a new tooth (her left, upper, middle tooth... what's that tooth's official name mom?) There are another three two teeth that are looking like they are ready to push through as well. Let's see, she gets about 2 teeth every 6 months... that means that by the time the her classmates in 1st grade are starting to loose their teeth Cairo will finally be getting her first molars!
In other exciting news, Cairo took her first steps yesterday. Cairo and I were watching her daddy through the sliding glass door in the family room when she turned, let go of the sliding door, and took two good steps to me. Then, she did it again for her daddy. She has been taking a small step to get from one piece of furniture to another, but I know it will only be a matter of a couple of weeks and she will be up and going.
Erik and I tried to get Cairo to walk for the camera today, but she wasn't interested (as you can see in the video... OOPS NOT ALL THE VIDEO IS HERE. I WILL FIX IT LATER).

Visiting Cousin Xander in Monrovia...
Last Wednesday, Cairo and I flew down to Southern California to meet Cairo's new cousin Xander. I went over to Heather's and helped her out on Wednesday and Thursday. Then, Heather and Xander came over to spend the weekend with us while Paul was out of town. I got my first taste at what it would be like to have two kids... juggling a new born and appeasing a one year old. All in all, though, it wasn't as hectic as I thought is might be. Here is my cute little nephew-

Xander is a big boy and already weighs more than Cairo did at 7 weeks. His feet are almost as long as Cairo's as well. Cairo likes her new cousin, but doesn't quite know what to do with him. She just smiles at him and gives him pat-pats on his bottom. I know she can't wait for him to get a little bigger so that she can show him how to play in the dirt and throw the ball for the dog.

While in Monrovia, Cairo discovered the rocking chair Heather, Danny, and I used when we were little. She spends a more time on her feet than her knees these days and loved using the rocking chair as a walker so that she could get around the living room.

Swin Lessons- Day 2, 3, and 4
Cairo's swim lessons are coming along.
Day 2: Cairo and Erik did this lesson together. Cairo cried a bit during the first part of the lesson, but as time passed she became more comfortable and cracked a smile or two.

Day 3: Due to the recommendation of the swim instructor, I joined Erik and Cairo in the water for the third lesson. Therefore, we don't have any pictures to share. Cairo enjoyed having me in the water with her and even had some fun. She liked it when her Daddy and Mommy blew bubbles at her and she liked to splash her dad with water, too. Cairo let me hold her out in front of me on her tummy so that she could kick her feet. She wan't as comfortable, though, being on her back in the water. Overall, much progress was made.
Day 4: Still no pictures. Daddy had the sniffles, so it was just Cairo and I in the water during the lesson. Cairo spent the entire time smiling and laughing. She likes to "jump" into the water and splash. She did better at swimming (which means kicking her feet) on both her tummy and her back. She even seemed comfortable enough to go all the way under water. We tried this at the end of the lesson. She sucked in a little water, but didn't seem to really mind.

The Morning
During the school year (late August to early June), Cairo is usually asleep when I leave for work. This summer, it has been nice getting Cairo up and spending the mornings with her. Many times, she is in the best mood of the day during the first two hours she's awake.
Cairo has been sleeping in until 9am most of the days this summer. Every once in a while Erik likes to sleep in like Cairo. So, I have been enjoying getting up and having a few hours in the morning all to myself where I get to check my e-mail or get a few things done.
One of Cairo's first thoughts in the morning is "ba-ba." Cairo is starting to transition her from the bottle to the sippy cup, but at this point, her morning bottle is a must. Here is Cairo enjoying her morning bottle on the dining room floor, along with the bunny she took from her toy basket sometime between when she went to bed and when she woke up (maybe we should move her toy basket farther from her crib) and her very own remote (that goes to absolutely nothing).

Baby Xander

Cairo has a new cousin and we all couldn't be more excited! Heather (my sister) gave birth to Alexander Wallace Hazen at 7:21 this morning. He is 20 3/4 inches long, 8 lbs 4 oz, and looks likes Paul. Paul sent some pictures of Xander, but of course I want more! I can't wait to meet the little guy. Congrats Heather and Paul- to a job well done and a fabulously cute little baby!

Swim Lessons- Day 1

Erik and Cairo and Nick and Mei are enrolled in a baby and parent swim class at the Arcata pool. Lessons are every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15pm for the next four weeks.
Day 1: With high expectations for a baby who loves water, Daddy and Cairo got into the pool. Cairo cried. They bounced around in the water together. Cairo cried a little more. Cairo practiced swimming on her back and her tummy and watched other kids. Cairo cried some more. Then, Cairo watched Cousin Mei cry. Mei seemed to have the same opinion as Cairo about the swim lessons.

Overall, it wasn't actually that bad. Cairo wasn't hysterical, but more unsure of her environment and of something new. The pool is a little cooler than her baths, but after a very warm day here (I might say it was hot if I didn't know it was a lot cooler than Monrovia), cool water wasn't all that unwelcome. Hopefully, Cairo will spend more time at the next lesson playing in the water and less time clinging to her Daddy making the pool salty with her tears.

This and That
The 4th

I had great plans to go out on the fourth, but in the end Cairo and I spent the day at home playing with the dogs, her wagon, and her toys (Erik was in and out running errands). It was nice to have a slow paced day, enjoying the sunshine. Plus, Cairo has completely worn me out the day before.
Erik, Cairo, and I went out to dinner and went by to visit Grandma Jill (who was recovering from a cold). When we got there, Mei was just having her bath and getting ready for bed. Cairo and Mei kissed each other good-night and we left. We had planned to see the aerial fireworks display in Arcata... but, as the sunset Cairo grew sleepy and Erik and I decided that a movie sounded better than fighting off the mosquitoes.

Tickle- Tickle

Yesterday marked a year to the day we first brought Cairo up north... and boy how things have changed. At this time last year Erik and I were sleep deprived, I was recovering from two operations, and we were trying to get Cairo to put on some weight. This year, Cairo is sleeping for 13-14 hours straight each night. That means that I get to sleep my 8 plus hours with no interruption. Cairo is getting big and more and more independent. She still only have two teeth and isn't walking yet, but she has a new tooth just waiting to poke through and she is getting more and more steady on her feet.
Lately, Cairo has been mimicking many of the things I do and she wants to help me. For example, when I sneeze, Cairo has to sneeze, too (though her sneeze if actually a forced cough). Then, she has to rub her nose with a kleenex or sock or napkin. The other day I rubbed my eye with the inside of my shirt, then Cairo had to use my shirt to rub my eye for me, too. If I am wiping down something (like her highchair tray), she has to help me wipe it as well. These are just a few of the many, many things that Cairo is doing... not to mention the sounds and voice inflections she mimics. My favorites are when she says "poo-poo" or when she barks at the dog (or the cat across the street).
Cairo is getting new words here and there, like "bue" (blue without the L). She says this when she wants a blueberry. I also think that she is trying to say Sienna (my dog's name)and it comes out like Ne-na. Though Cairo is getting a few new words and sounds, she still doesn't quite grasp the meaning of everything. A dog-dog is any and all animals. Cairo is very adamant about this. A typical interaction with Cairo goes something like this:
Mom/Dad: "Look, Cairo, there's a cat! Say Cat."
Cairo: "Dog-dog."
Mom/Dad: "No, Caaa-aaat, caaa-aaat."
Cairo: "Dooo-ooog, dooo-ooog."
---------------------
Mom/Dad: "Cairo, are you playing with your duck?"
Cairo: "Dog-dog."
Mom/Dad: "It's a duck. Duuuckkkk, duuuckkk."
Cairo: "Dog-dog" or the occasional "dog-ck, dog-ck"
---------------------
We see a cow.
Cairo: "Dog-dog"
Mom/Dad: "That is a cow."
Cairo: "DOG-DOG."
---------------------
She just doesn't get it. I hope that by the time she gets into kindergarten that she figures it out. I am sure that she will.
One last things I would like to mention is Cairo's tantrums. I tell my mom about this and she just laughs at me and gives me no sympathy at all. Karma. Cairo sure did wear me out the other day. By the time she went to bed I was exhausted. How someone has six kids is beyond me!
Most of the time Cairo is very sweet natured and she is a pretty good girl. However, if you plan to set limits that she doesn't agree with, Lord help you. Cairo will throw her head back, hit the floor, and scream. Too bad it doesn't work for her. I am sure that she will realize sometime soon that I am meaner and more stubborn than she will ever be (I hope)... and I don't give in. It's also too bad for Cairo that her Daddy is just as steadfast as I am. When she does this, I normally just walk away. It is no fun to have a fit is there is no one to watch.
Okay, I am going to stop with the rambling. I am sure that Cairo will enjoy reading this when she is older...
