Cairo at four and Jonah at two are a lot of fun. Everyday Erik and I are amused by the things they do and the things they say. There are so many things I don't want to forget. I know with time the memories will fade only to be brought back my a certain look or smell. So, in an effort to remember the things about my babies that make me smile I thought I would spend some time writing them out.
Jonah-
Jonah is my boy through and through. From the glimmer in his eye to the loud screams he constantly reminds me of, well, me. Not like I have the chance of forgetting this, but that boy is LOUD! Whether it is 1 am or 1 pm he will let the world know if he is mad, sad, or happy. Squeals of delight. Screams of outrage. It doesn't matter.... they are all LOUD!
Jonah's signature look is his sippy of milk stuck to his face and his green blanky in hand. The moment he wakes up he finds me and says the he wants milk and Harry Pott-amus (aka Harry Potter). So, it has become a morning ritual to get up and spend a half hour on the couch cuddling with his sippy and blankey, while watching Harry Pott-amus. At the moment, he cracks up every time the house fills up with mail.

I just love the way that Jonah says things. He always has a little comment to add to something, however random it might be. For example, if we are going over to Alvin's house to feed the chickens, Jonah always has to add, "Chickens don't scare me," because, of course, he's scared of chickens. We can't really even say the word chicken without him mentioning this. Another time, Jonah and I went to Cairo's dance class and when Ba-chan came in to watch with us, instead of saying hi he said, "I got oatmeal all over the table," talking about the scene at breakfast where he got in trouble for smearing his oatmeal all over the place. When he's swinging, he yell out that he's swinging to the moon. Sometime he just likes to add details. Like when I asked him about picking potatoes with Ba-chan, he told me that she put the potatoes in her pocket. He also just says cute stuff. Like going into Grandpa Lee's workshop, looking around, and saying "cool 'tuff." Today, we went to Redwood Creek and as we are walking down there he said, " I am going to catch a fish and put it in my backpack." Later, he told Erik that he really, REALLY needed a fish to put in his backpack and he's not scared of fish... which, of course, means he is. Lately, he seems to be on a "really, REALLY" stint whenever he wants something. I REALLY want all of them. I REALLY want to go outside. I REALLY want you to read to me. I wish I could record all the little things he says (what I have just written doesn't do it justice), because it's not necessarily the words he says that are so entertaining, it more his timing when he says them and the way he says it.
It's fun to hear the way the kids look at the way the world looks around them, to see their misunderstandings about the nature of physics. The other day Jonah was playing with a balloon he had gotten earlier in the day. He was having fun running around with it, letting it go and standing on furniture to pull it back down. After trying to set his balloon down, he said in a very confused and disappointed voice, "I set my balloon on the ground and it flew away." He didn't understand what happened.
It still cracks me up that my kids still have the ability to just fall asleep all of the sudden. It doesn't happen that often, but it does still happen. I was talking to Erik and Jonah was in my lap and before I knew it he slouched face forward and fell fast asleep.
Cairo-
Erik made a good point to me the other day when he asked me whether I noticed the fact that our dogs mirror the personalities of out children. Jonah/ Guinness- they are trouble, stubborn, persistent. Cairo/ Sienna- when they don't want to do something, they move as slow as they possibly can. When Sienna has to go into the dog yard, she drags her feet as slow as she possibly can. On the other hand, Cairo will take forever to make her bed. Making the bed is Cairo least favorite activity. Some days she sucks it up and does it. More of than not she whines, complains, and spends way too much time trying to get out of doing it. The other day it took her about an hour and a half to get it done. Her process goes like this-
- Lay in bed for a while. Complain that it is too hard.
- Lay in bed a little longer. Complain that she needs help (when in fact she hasn't even tried to do anything).
- Throw the pillows and loose blankets from the bed. Complain.
- Lay down again. Complain. Ask for help.
- Finally start pulling up the covers.
- Sing a song while crying. The song was funny. In her crying, sad voice she sung a ballad about being all by herself having to make her bed. I think it started like this, "Alone. Alone, making my bed. I'm all by myself and no one is in here with me...." It was pathetic, but not pathetic enough to let her off the hook. Her song also reminded me of the song "All by Myself."
- And, alas, the bed is made!
One of Cairo's favorite terms is "disgusting." These days everything seems to be disgusting. Slugs- disgusting (I get that). Worms, boogers, Jonah's diapers, doggy kisses- disgusting. Anyway time she can throw that word out she does. Disgusting. Disgusting. Disgusting. I like that Cairo tries to use big words. In a debate with Grandpa Tipple last week she even threw out the word
therefore. She used it properly, too. Grandpa Tipple was trying to convince her that her red balloon was his. Cairo stated her argument as to why he was wrong and ended it with "... therefore, the balloon is mine." Not sure where that came from but it made both Grandpa and I crack up. He asked where her "college talk" came from.
Cairo know that her Auntie Kyoko is from Japan and that Japan is far way, but apparently, she didn't know how far away because she asked Ba-chan if Japan was on Earth.
Cairo loves to smell soap. Anytime we are out- the store, someone's house, the porta-potty porta handwashers, public restrooms- she squirts on the soap and takes a wiff. I guess it can be said that Cairo likes to "stop and smell the
flowers hand soap." I'm glad that the little things in life bring her such pleasure. She always makes sure to add a nice remark about the soap, too.
